Through a careful selection process, each self-employed Provider is supported by our Y Home Child Care Consultants.
Our Consultants visit each home regularly to ensure the delivery of high-quality care and compliance with the Ministry of Education’s Child Care & Early Years Act, 2014 and Y Home Child Care policies and procedures.
The Y Home Child Care Program puts the interest of your child as its top priority and values parents as the experts of their children. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure your child reaches their full potential.
Your child is cared for in a real family home, in a smaller group setting that naturally feels warmer and more personal than a larger centre. It’s an especially popular choice for infants and toddlers who thrive with consistency and fewer transitions throughout the day.
Licensed Home Child Care providers can often accommodate schedules that don’t fit the standard Monday-to-Friday mould — including extended hours, overnight care, and weekend care. If your work schedule is irregular or unpredictable, this may be the right fit.
One of the great advantages of home child care is the age range it covers. Children from infancy through age 12 can be cared for under the same program, and family groupings allow siblings of different ages to stay together.
Every YMCA Home Child Care Provider operates under contract with the YMCA as an approved agency under the Ministry of Education. Your Provider’s home is visited regularly by a YMCA consultant to verify compliance, quality of care, and program delivery — not just at the start, but on an ongoing basis.
YMCA Licensed Home Child Care follows Ontario’s How Does Learning Happen? framework, which emphasizes four foundations central to every child’s development: Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement, and Expression. Providers build positive relationships, support learning through play and exploration, and engage families as full partners in their child’s care.
Child care spots in Ontario are managed through centralized municipal waitlist registries. Here’s how to get started.
Register online through the waitlist registry for your region. There is no fee to be placed on the waitlist.
The registry lets you research agencies and the types of care offered, map locations near your home or workplace, apply to multiple programs for multiple children at once, learn about fee subsidies, and access and update your application anywhere, anytime.

The waitlist registry is also your starting point for learning about fee subsidies available in your area.
Fee schedules vary by ages and program type. Families with children under 6 may be eligible for reduced fees through the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) agreement. Separate fee schedules apply for children 6 and older.
Once a match becomes available, the YMCA Home Child Care team will contact you to begin the registration process. You’ll receive a registration package to complete and return.
Before care begins, you’ll have the opportunity to interview your matched provider and ensure it’s the right fit for your family. Your YMCA consultant remains your ongoing point of contact for any questions, concerns, or changes in care.

Many children, families, and staff/providers in child care and early years settings are experiencing increased stress and anxiety, feelings of isolation and are worried about their health and wellbeing and that of their family and friends. Below are some resources and tips about mental health and well-being to support the child care and early years sector, children, and families. This information comes from the Ministry of Education.
Importance of Self-Care
Consider how to model and promote self-care, support connections and relationships and model flexibility and empathy. Take care of yourself first. If you are well, you will be in a better position to support the others around you.
Resources like Self-Care 101 and The Wheel of Well-Being could be helpful to you and the children and families you work with.
Diverse Backgrounds and Communities
Consider the realities faced by different communities. What is needed? What are they telling us? What can be done? The Youth Mental Health Resource Hub offers posters and resources that may help child care and early years operators consider the different needs of the children and families they support.
Supporting Children’s Mental Health and Well-Being
Supporting children’s mental health can begin by modelling the behaviours and coping strategies for children to follow. Providing children with opportunities to work cooperatively, feel empowered and assist others can also support mental health and well-being. Additionally, it is important to create a space where children feel comfortable to vocalize their challenges and needs.
For information about the many available and free mental health services and supports for children and adults, visit COVID-19: Support for People. The Kids Help Phone website also offers resources that can be shared with children and families to support mental health and wellbeing.
Supporting children’s learning, development and emotional well-being helps to maintain positive spaces for children to thrive. The province has created a resource entitled Building on How Does Learning Happen? Pedagogical Approaches to Re-opening Early and Child Care Programs in Ontario to support child care and early years providers to safely operate programs during COVID-19 pandemic through shared ideas, reflective questions and lessons learned. The document also contains links to resources that may be useful, including Children’s Mental Health Ontario resources for how to speak to children about their feelings/help them cope (https://cmho.org/covid19/).
The program serves children from infancy through 12 years of age. Siblings of different ages can often be cared for together under the same provider, which many families find especially convenient.
A significant difference. YMCA Licensed Home Child Care providers operate under a formal license through the YMCA as an approved Ministry of Education agency. Each provider is carefully screened before being accepted, and is visited regularly by a YMCA Home Child Care Consultant to ensure compliance with provincial standards and YMCA policies. Unlicensed caregivers are not subject to any of these requirements.
Providers can often accommodate flexible schedules, including early mornings, evenings, overnights, and weekends — which is one of the key reasons families choose home child care. Availability varies by provider. Contact our team to discuss your specific needs.
Fees vary by provider and care arrangement. Through the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) agreement, families with children under 6 enrolled in licensed home child care may be eligible for reduced fees. Additional subsidy support may also be available based on family income. Download the Family Information Guide for current fee information or contact our office directly.
After you register on the municipal waitlist and a spot becomes available, our Home Child Care team will work with you to find a provider who is a good fit for your family — taking into account location, schedule, children’s ages, and any specific needs.
Your first point of contact is always your YMCA Home Child Care Consultant. We have an open-door policy and your feedback is always welcome. You can also reach our administrative team directly.
Currently, YMCA Licensed Home Child Care is available in the Nipissing and Sudbury districts. It is not available in Timmins at this time.
Providers follow Ontario’s How Does Learning Happen? framework, emphasizing the four foundations of Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement, and Expression. Providers build learning into everyday routines and play, and document children’s growth in partnership with families.
Every YMCA Licensed Home Child Care Provider is guided by a shared Code of Ethics — a commitment to inclusion, open communication, confidentiality, and putting the needs of each child and family first. Parents are recognized as the primary caregivers, and providers are there to support and complement that role, not replace it.

Thinking about turning your passion for working with children into a licensed business? YMCA Licensed Home Child Care providers are self-employed — setting their own hours, working from home, and building something of their own — with the full support of the YMCA behind them.
